Fujifilm for Landscapes
Fujifilm cameras are excellent landscape tools for reasons that go beyond image quality. The X-Trans sensor resolves fine detail without an optical low-pass filter, which means you get the full resolving power of the sensor for foliage, rock texture, and water detail. The 40-megapixel X-Trans V sensor in the X-T5 and X-H2 produces landscape files that hold up to aggressive cropping and large prints.
The dynamic range capability matters enormously for landscapes. Scenes with bright sky and dark foreground, the majority of landscape situations, benefit from Fujifilm's DR200 and DR400 settings, which extend highlight recovery by underexposing and then lifting shadows in the JPEG processing pipeline. This is not a gimmick. It genuinely recovers detail in bright skies that would otherwise blow out, reducing the need for graduated ND filters or exposure bracketing.
The compact size of X-mount bodies and lenses matters when you are hiking to a location. An X-T5 with the XF 10-24mm f/4 weighs substantially less than any equivalent full-frame setup. Weather sealing on the XT-series bodies and WR lenses means you do not need to pack the camera away when conditions deteriorate, and the best landscape light often comes with the worst weather.
The recipe workflow suits landscape photography because it encourages you to make creative decisions in the field rather than deferring everything to the edit. When you set up a recipe for the conditions and the mood you want, you engage with the scene more thoughtfully. The JPEG that comes out of the camera is the image you envisioned, not a flat RAW file waiting for hours of post-processing.
Essential Camera Settings
Aperture
f/8 to f/11 is the sweet spot for landscape sharpness on APS-C. At these apertures, the lens is near its peak resolving power and the depth of field is sufficient to hold everything from a few metres to infinity acceptably sharp. Avoid f/16 and smaller on APS-C because diffraction softens the image noticeably at these apertures. If you need more depth of field than f/11 provides, focus at the hyperfocal distance rather than stopping down further.
ISO
Base ISO (160 on most Fujifilm bodies, 125 on the X-T5/X-H2) delivers the cleanest files with the most dynamic range. Landscapes are rarely time-critical, so there is usually no reason to raise ISO. If you need a slower shutter speed for flowing water or cloud movement, use an ND filter rather than raising ISO.
Focus
Single-point AF gives you precise control over where the camera focuses. For landscapes, place the focus point on a subject roughly one-third into the scene. This approximates the hyperfocal distance for most landscape apertures and focal lengths. Alternatively, use manual focus with the distance scale on the lens: at f/8 with a 16mm lens, focusing at 2 metres puts everything from about 1 metre to infinity in acceptable focus.
On bodies with focus peaking, enable it at its lowest setting for precise manual focus without the peaking overlay becoming distracting.
Tripod and Stabilisation
A tripod produces sharper results than any image stabilisation system, especially at base ISO and small apertures where shutter speeds can drop below handheld thresholds. Use a 2-second timer or a remote release to avoid camera shake from pressing the shutter. On bodies with IBIS (X-T5, X-H2S), handheld shooting is viable for most daylight landscapes, but a tripod remains superior for long exposures, blue hour work, and bracketed exposures.
Film Simulations for Landscapes
Landscape photography benefits from the full range of Fujifilm's film simulations. The right choice depends on the mood you want, not the subject.
Velvia: Vivid and Saturated
The landscape classic. Velvia was the slide film that defined landscape photography for decades, and Fujifilm's digital version captures its character: punchy greens, vivid blues, and warm golden tones. It is unapologetically saturated and looks spectacular for autumn foliage, tropical water, and sunset skies. The trade-off is that it can over-saturate in already colourful scenes, where a field of poppies under golden light may look cartoonish. Use Velvia when you want impact and vibrancy.
Astia: Natural Colour
Moderate saturation with accurate colour reproduction. Astia renders landscapes as they look to the eye, with a slight lift that prevents flatness. Greens are green, blues are blue, and nothing is exaggerated. This is the reliable all-rounder for landscapes when you want fidelity rather than drama. It handles mixed-colour scenes (green meadow, blue sky, warm rock) without pushing any one colour over the top.
Classic Chrome: Muted and Editorial
Desaturated with a distinctive rendering of greens and blues. Classic Chrome gives landscapes a documentary quality, less "postcard perfect" and more "I was there." It excels in overcast or moody conditions where the subdued palette matches the mood of the light. Urban landscapes and industrial scenes benefit particularly from its restrained colour.
PRO Neg Std: Subtle and Refined
Low contrast, gentle colour. PRO Neg Std produces landscapes with a soft, almost pastel quality that works beautifully in misty conditions, gentle dawn light, and scenes dominated by subtle tonal variations. It is the opposite of Velvia: where Velvia shouts, PRO Neg Std whispers.
Eterna: Desaturated and Cinematic
Very low contrast and saturation, designed for cinema colour grading. In landscape photography, Eterna produces moody, atmospheric images with a cinematic quality. Blues become steel-grey, greens become olive, and the overall impression is restrained and contemplative. It pairs well with fog, rain, and the flat light of overcast days.
Recipe Tuning for Landscapes
Dynamic Range
DR200 is the landscape photographer's best friend. It extends highlight recovery by one stop, preserving detail in bright skies without darkening the foreground. Use DR200 as your default for any scene with visible sky. DR400 extends by two stops but requires ISO 640 minimum and can introduce noise in shadows, so use it for extreme contrast situations like shooting into the sun. DR100 (off) is fine for evenly lit scenes with no bright sky.
Highlight and Shadow Tone
For landscapes, a slight highlight reduction (-0.5 to -1) paired with a slight shadow lift (-0.5) opens up the tonal range without looking processed. This is essentially a subtle contrast reduction that retains detail in both extremes. For moodier landscapes, leave both at 0 or push shadows slightly positive (+0.5) for darker, more dramatic shadow areas.
Colour and Sharpness
Colour at 0 or +1 is typical for landscapes. Unlike portraits, where you often desaturate for smoother skin, landscapes generally benefit from neutral to slightly boosted colour. The simulation itself handles the character; you are just adjusting intensity. Sharpness at 0 to +1 is fine for landscapes; unlike portraits, there is no skin to worry about, and foliage, rock, and water textures benefit from crisp rendering.
White Balance Choices
White balance has a dramatic effect on landscape mood. For golden hour, a Kelvin of 5500-6000K preserves the warm light faithfully. For blue hour, 4000-4500K intensifies the blue. Overcast landscapes at 6000K add a subtle warmth that counteracts the cool, flat quality of cloud-covered skies. The Daylight preset (approximately 5200K) is a reliable neutral starting point if you prefer not to set Kelvin manually.

XF 10-24mm f/4 R OIS WR: Ultra-Wide
The workhorse landscape zoom. At 10mm (15mm equivalent), it captures vast panoramic views with strong foreground-to-background depth. The optical stabilisation helps in low light handheld, and weather sealing means you can shoot in rain and mist. The f/4 aperture is more than sufficient for landscape work where you are typically at f/8-f/11 anyway.
XF 16mm f/1.4 R WR: Low Light and Astro
A fast wide prime that doubles as an astrophotography lens. At f/1.4, it gathers enough light for star photography at reasonable ISOs. For daytime landscapes, it is a sharp, compact wide-angle option. The close-focus ability (15cm) lets you create dramatic near-far compositions with small foreground subjects.
XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR: Versatile
The standard zoom that covers wide-angle to short telephoto. It is sharp across the range and weather-sealed. Heavier than other options, but if you carry one lens for a mixed shooting day that includes landscapes, this covers the most useful focal lengths.
XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR: Travel
The ultimate one-lens travel solution for landscapes. It covers 24-120mm equivalent with stabilisation and weather sealing. It is not as sharp as the primes or the 16-55mm at its extremes, but the convenience of the range is hard to beat when you are hiking and every gram matters.
XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR: Telephoto
Compressed landscapes, isolating distant mountain ranges, layered hills, or a single tree against a ridge, are some of the most striking landscape images. The 50-140mm (75-210mm equivalent) enables this style of shooting. It is a large lens, but the results justify the weight for photographers who work with telephoto compression as a primary compositional tool.
Composition in the Field

Foreground Interest
The most common compositional weakness in landscape photography is an empty foreground. A wide-angle lens pointed at a mountain range with nothing in the bottom third of the frame produces a flat, distant image. Find something in the foreground (a rock, flowers, a stream, a fallen branch) and use it to create depth. Get low and close to the foreground element with a wide lens to exaggerate the near-to-far relationship. This transforms a flat scene into a three-dimensional one.
Leading Lines
Rivers, paths, fences, shorelines, and ridgelines all create natural leading lines that pull the viewer's eye into the frame. The strongest compositions use leading lines that start near a corner of the frame and curve or diagonal towards the main subject. S-curves (rivers, winding roads) are particularly effective because they slow the eye down and create a sense of journey through the image.
Light as the Subject
In landscape photography, the light often matters more than the location. A mundane field at golden hour can be spectacular; a dramatic mountain range under flat midday light can be boring. Plan your visits around the light. Golden hour (the hour before sunset and after sunrise) and blue hour (the 20-30 minutes after sunset and before sunrise) produce the most compelling landscape light. Overcast days are not failures. They provide soft, even illumination that is ideal for forests, waterfalls, and intimate landscapes where direct sunlight would create problematic contrast.
Patience and Return Visits
The best landscape photographers revisit locations repeatedly, in different seasons, weather, and light. A location you dismiss on a sunny afternoon may be extraordinary in morning mist or after fresh snow. Scouting with your phone during casual visits, noting compositions, angles, and how light falls at different times, pays dividends when you return with your camera under ideal conditions.
Common Questions
Velvia is the classic choice for vivid, saturated landscapes with punchy greens and blues. For more natural tones, Astia provides pleasing saturation without the intensity. Classic Chrome works well for moody, desaturated landscape looks.
Use aperture f/8 to f/11 for maximum sharpness across the frame. Set ISO to the base value (ISO 125 or 160 depending on your camera). Use Dynamic Range DR200 or DR400 to preserve highlights in bright skies while retaining shadow detail.
DR200 is the safest default for landscapes. It preserves an extra stop of highlight detail with minimal noise trade-off. DR400 recovers two extra stops of highlights but requires a minimum ISO of four times your camera's base (ISO 500 on a base 125 body, ISO 640 on base 160), so use it only in bright conditions where the raised ISO does not matter.
