Focus Modes and Autofocus Settings on Fujifilm

How Fujifilm Autofocus Works
Fujifilm X-series cameras use a hybrid autofocus system that combines phase detection and contrast detection. Phase detection pixels are embedded in the sensor itself, providing fast initial focus acquisition. Contrast detection refines the result, particularly in low light and at the edges of the frame where phase detection coverage may be thinner. The camera switches between the two methods automatically depending on the situation.
The practical consequence is that Fujifilm autofocus performance varies significantly between camera generations. X-Trans III bodies (X-T2, X-T3, X-Pro2) have functional autofocus that works well for most static and moderately paced subjects but can struggle with fast, unpredictable movement. X-Trans IV bodies (X-T4, X-Pro3, X-S10, X100V) improved tracking and subject detection meaningfully. X-Trans V bodies (X-T5, X-H2, X-S20, X100VI, X-M5, X-E5) brought a substantial leap in subject recognition, including AI-powered detection for people, animals, birds, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, aeroplanes, and trains.
This generational difference matters when choosing your focus settings. If you own an X-Trans V body, you can lean more heavily on automated focus area modes and subject detection, confident that the system will find and track your subject reliably. On an older body, you will get better results taking more manual control over where the camera focuses. The settings recommendations in this article note where generational differences are most relevant.
AF-S, AF-C, and Manual Focus
The focus mode switch on your camera (or the menu setting, on bodies without a physical switch) controls how the autofocus system behaves once you engage it. There are three autofocus modes and one manual option.
AF-S: Single Autofocus
AF-S focuses once when you half-press the shutter button, locks, and holds that focus distance until you release and press again. It is the most precise autofocus mode because the camera takes its time to nail the focus, and it confirms success with a green indicator (and an optional beep, which you should disable if you are shooting around people).
AF-S is the right choice for any subject that is not moving towards or away from you. Portraits, landscapes, architecture, still life, food, and product photography all work best in AF-S. It is also the mode to use for the focus-recompose technique: place your focus point on the subject's eye, half-press to lock, then reframe the composition while maintaining focus lock. This technique is slightly less reliable at very wide apertures (f/1.2 to f/1.4) where the depth of field is so thin that even a small recompose movement can shift the focus plane, but for most shooting it is fast and effective.
AF-C: Continuous Autofocus
AF-C continuously adjusts focus as long as the shutter button is half-pressed. The camera tracks the subject's movement and predicts where it will be at the moment of exposure. This is essential for anything that moves: children, pets, sport, wildlife, street scenes where people are walking towards you.
The trade-off with AF-C is that it uses more battery, the camera does not give a focus confirmation (because focus is always changing), and in some situations the continuous refocusing can "hunt" or oscillate around the correct focus point, particularly in low light or low contrast scenes. AF-C also behaves differently depending on which focus area mode you pair it with and which AF-C custom settings you have configured, both of which are covered in the sections below.
A common approach among experienced Fujifilm shooters is to leave the camera in AF-C for general shooting, relying on the system to hold focus on static subjects (which it does well on X-Trans IV and V bodies) while being ready for movement when it happens. This avoids the need to switch modes when the situation changes.
AF-A: Auto Switching
AF-A lets the camera decide whether to use AF-S or AF-C based on whether it detects subject movement. In theory this is the best of both worlds. In practice, the mode-switching decision can introduce a slight delay, and it occasionally gets the choice wrong, using AF-C when you wanted precise single-shot focus or AF-S when the subject has started moving. Most experienced shooters prefer to make this choice themselves rather than delegating it to the camera.
Manual Focus and Focus Aids
Manual focus gives you complete control over the focus distance by turning the lens's focus ring. On modern autofocus lenses this is focus-by-wire (the ring sends an electronic signal rather than mechanically moving elements), which some photographers find less tactile than true mechanical manual focus.
Fujifilm provides several focus aids that make manual focus practical. Focus Peaking highlights in-focus edges with a coloured overlay (white, red, or blue at adjustable sensitivity). Digital Split Image recreates the split-prism focusing screen from film SLRs, with a section of the image that appears split when out of focus and aligned when sharp. Focus Check automatically magnifies the focus area when you turn the focus ring, giving you a detailed view of sharpness.
Manual focus is worth learning even if you rely on autofocus for most shooting. It is the reliable fallback for situations where autofocus struggles: very low light, subjects behind glass or fences, macro work at extreme close distances, and any scene with low contrast where the AF system has nothing to lock onto.
Focus Area Modes
Focus area modes control where in the frame the camera looks for focus. This is independent of whether you are in AF-S or AF-C; you can use any focus area with any focus mode. The choice comes down to how much control you want versus how much you trust the camera to find the right subject.
Single Point
You place a single focus point anywhere in the frame using the joystick (on bodies that have one) or the directional pad. The camera focuses only on what falls under that point. This is maximum control: you decide exactly where focus lands. The point size can usually be adjusted from very small (for precise focus on a specific detail) to larger (for easier target acquisition).
Single Point is the workhorse focus area for deliberate photography. Portraits where you need to nail the near eye. Macro work where the focus plane is millimetres thin. Architecture where you want a specific detail sharp. It is slightly slower to use than automated area modes because you need to position the point, but it virtually eliminates the "camera focused on the wrong thing" problem. If you are coming from another camera system and find Fujifilm's AF unreliable, try Single Point before changing anything else. The issue is often the area mode, not the AF system itself.
Zone
Zone uses a group of focus points in a rectangular area that you can position and resize. The camera focuses on the nearest or most prominent subject within the zone. This gives you directional control (the zone is roughly where you point it) while accommodating some subject movement within the zone's boundaries.
Zone is the sweet spot for action and street photography. Set a medium-sized zone over the area where you expect the subject to be, and the camera handles the fine tracking within that area. It is particularly effective paired with AF-C for subjects that are moving but whose general position in the frame is predictable: a runner on a track, a cyclist approaching along a road, a child running in a park.
Wide/Tracking
Wide mode uses the entire frame to find a subject, relying on the camera's intelligence to decide what to focus on. On X-Trans V bodies, this mode activates AI-powered subject detection that can identify and track faces, eyes, animals, birds, vehicles, and other subjects automatically. On older bodies, Wide mode tends to focus on the nearest high-contrast subject, which is less reliable.
When subject detection works, it is remarkable. The camera finds a face in a crowd and locks onto the near eye as the person moves through the frame. A bird in flight is tracked across the sky. A car is followed through a corner. On X-Trans V bodies, Wide/Tracking with subject detection enabled is a genuine game-changer that makes previously difficult shots routine.
The limitation is that the camera decides what to focus on, and it does not always agree with you. In scenes with multiple potential subjects, it may pick the wrong person or the wrong animal. In scenes with no clear subject, it may hunt indecisively. For these situations, fall back to Zone or Single Point where you make the decision.
Face and Eye Detection
Face and Eye Detection can be enabled as an overlay on top of any focus area mode. When active, the camera prioritises detected faces and attempts to focus on the nearest eye. This is extremely useful for portrait work and any people-focused photography. On X-Trans V bodies, the detection is fast and reliable. On older bodies, it works but can be slower to acquire and more easily confused by non-face objects.
A common setup is to leave Face/Eye Detection on most of the time and disable it via a function button when shooting subjects where it interferes (architecture, landscapes, still life). This gives you instant face tracking when people are in the frame without needing to dive into menus.
AF-C Custom Settings Demystified
Fujifilm cameras offer AF-C custom settings (sometimes called AF-C presets) that control how the continuous autofocus system behaves when tracking a subject. These settings are powerful but poorly explained in the camera manual. Understanding what each parameter does lets you tune the tracking for specific situations rather than relying on the factory presets.
Tracking Sensitivity
This controls how quickly the AF system responds when something new appears in the focus area. At low sensitivity (values like 1 or 2), the camera ignores brief obstructions: if a person walks between you and your subject, the camera holds focus on the original subject rather than jumping to the passer-by. At high sensitivity (values like 4 or 5), the camera switches to new subjects quickly, which is useful when the subject itself is changing (such as photographing different runners as they pass a fixed point).
For most tracking situations, a middle value (2 or 3) is the best starting point. It gives the system enough patience to ignore obstacles while still responding to genuine subject changes. Only push sensitivity to the extremes when you have a specific reason: very low for shooting through crowds or fences, very high for rapidly changing subjects.
Speed Tracking Sensitivity
This controls how the AF system handles changes in subject speed. At low values, the tracking algorithm assumes smooth, predictable motion and averages out sudden speed changes. At high values, it responds immediately to acceleration and deceleration. A sprinter exploding out of the blocks needs high speed tracking sensitivity. A person walking steadily towards you needs low.
Set this based on the nature of the movement you are tracking. For most human and animal movement, a value of 0 to 2 works well. For highly erratic subjects (birds in flight changing direction, children darting around), push it to 3 or higher.
Zone Area Switching
When using Zone AF in AF-C mode, this setting controls whether the camera prioritises the nearest subject in the zone (Front) or tries to stick with the subject it initially locked onto (Auto). Front priority is useful when you want to photograph whatever is closest, regardless of what entered the zone first. Auto priority is better for tracking a specific subject through a scene where other objects may cross the zone.
The Factory Presets
Most Fujifilm cameras offer preset AF-C configurations (labelled SET 1 through SET 5 on newer bodies) that combine these parameters for common scenarios. SET 1 is typically a general-purpose balanced setting. Other presets are tuned for ignoring obstacles, following erratic movement, or tracking subjects that suddenly appear in the frame. The presets are a good starting point, and for many shooters they are all that is needed. But if you find that a preset almost works but not quite, now you know which parameter to adjust and why.
Setups for Common Situations
Rather than a settings lookup table, this section explains why certain combinations work for each situation, so you can adapt when circumstances do not fit neatly into a category.
Portraits
Use AF-S with Single Point or, on X-Trans V bodies, Wide/Tracking with Face/Eye Detection enabled. The goal is precise focus on the near eye, which requires either manual point placement (Single Point) or reliable eye detection (Wide/Tracking on newer bodies). At wide apertures like f/1.2 to f/2, the depth of field is thin enough that focusing on the nose instead of the eye is visible. AF-S gives you the focus confirmation that AF-C does not, so you know the eye is sharp before you fire.
On older bodies where eye detection is less reliable, stick with Single Point placed on the subject's near eye. It is slower but more dependable than trusting the camera to find the right eye in a scene with multiple faces or complex backgrounds.
Street Photography
Street photography needs fast, decisive focus with minimal fuss. AF-C with a medium Zone is a strong default: it lets you point the camera at the scene, and the zone handles the fine positioning within a general area. Single Point works if your subjects are more static and you have time to compose deliberately.
Pre-AF (the camera continuously adjusting focus even before you half-press) can speed up acquisition noticeably for street work, at the cost of battery life and occasional audible lens noise. Some street photographers prefer zone focusing manually: set the lens to a hyperfocal distance (roughly 3 to 5 metres at f/5.6 to f/8 on a 23mm lens) and rely on depth of field to keep everything acceptably sharp without any autofocus at all. This is the fastest "focus" method because there is no focus step.
Action and Sport
AF-C is essential. The focus area choice depends on the predictability of the movement. For subjects moving along a predictable path (runners on a track, cyclists on a road), Zone AF with a medium-to-large zone gives the best results. Position the zone where the subject will be and let the camera track within it. Set tracking sensitivity to 2 or 3 so the system is not thrown off by background clutter.
For erratic movement (team sports, skateboarding, children), Wide/Tracking with subject detection is the better choice on X-Trans V bodies. The AI tracking can follow a subject through rapid direction changes more reliably than zone-based tracking. Set speed tracking sensitivity higher (3 to 4) to handle acceleration and deceleration. On older bodies, Zone AF with a larger zone is still the most reliable approach, as Wide mode without AI detection is too easily confused by busy backgrounds.
Wildlife
Similar to sport but with some specific adjustments. Enable animal or bird subject detection if your camera supports it (X-Trans V bodies). This makes a dramatic difference for birds in flight and animals that are partially obscured by vegetation. Use AF-C with Zone or Wide/Tracking. Set tracking sensitivity low (1 or 2) so branches and leaves do not pull focus away from the animal behind them. Disable the AF illuminator, which can disturb animals and is useless at the distances typically involved in wildlife photography.
Video
For video, AF-C is the only practical autofocus mode. The focus behaviour during video recording is smoother than during stills: the camera deliberately slows down focus transitions to avoid jarring snap-focus movements that look unnatural in motion footage. Face/Eye Detection is particularly valuable for video because it maintains focus on a person as they move naturally within the frame.
If autofocus hunting (the lens oscillating back and forth around the correct focus) is a problem during video, try using a smaller focus area (Single Point or small Zone) to give the system less to be confused by. Some videographers prefer manual focus for critical work, using the focus peaking overlay to judge sharpness during recording.
Common Questions
Use AF-S (single) for stationary subjects like portraits and landscapes. It locks focus precisely. Use AF-C (continuous) for moving subjects like street, sports, and children. It tracks focus continuously. Enable Face/Eye Detection for any scene with people.
Go to AF/MF Settings > Face/Eye Detection Setting and turn it ON. Select Eye as the detection type. On X-Trans IV and V cameras, eye detection works in both AF-S and AF-C modes. It automatically locks onto the nearest eye, which is critical for sharp portraits at wide apertures.
