Video on Fujifilm: What You Need to Know

Fujifilm cameras have a significant advantage for video that no other brand offers in quite the same way: film simulations apply to video recording, not just stills. When you record video in Classic Chrome, Eterna, or any other simulation, the video output carries the same colour science, tone curves, and character as the JPEG stills. This means the recipe approach extends to video. You can set a look in-camera and shoot video that is colour-graded as you record it, without touching editing software.

This is genuinely unusual. Canon, Nikon, and Sony offer colour profiles for video, but they are typically simpler and less characterful than Fujifilm's simulations. The ability to shoot video with Classic Chrome's documentary palette or Eterna's cinema-grade colour directly from the camera gives Fujifilm shooters a head start on the final look that other systems require post-production to achieve.

Not all Fujifilm bodies are equal for video. The X-H2S is the video-focused body in the current lineup, offering the highest frame rates, internal ProRes recording, and the best autofocus tracking during video. The X-H2 offers 8K and 6.2K recording for maximum resolution. The X-T5, X-S20, and X100VI are capable video cameras but with more limited frame rate and codec options. If video is a primary use case, the X-H series bodies are worth considering. If video is occasional alongside stills, any current body will produce good results.

Frame Rates, Resolution, and Codecs

Frame Rates

Frame rate determines the look and feel of motion in your video. 24fps(technically 23.976fps) is the cinema standard. It produces a slightly staccato motion with natural motion blur that audiences associate with "cinematic" content. If you want your video to feel like a film, shoot 24fps. 30fps is smoother and more common for web content, social media, and general-purpose video. 60fps produces very smooth motion that works well for action, sport, and footage you plan to slow down to 50% speed in a 30fps timeline or 40% in a 24fps timeline.

Higher frame rates (120fps and above, available on the X-H2S and some other bodies) are specifically for slow motion. Recording at 120fps and playing back at 24fps gives you 5x slow motion. The trade-off is that higher frame rates often come with reduced resolution or codec options, and they require significantly more light because the faster effective shutter speed lets less light reach the sensor per frame.

Resolution

4K (3840x2160) is the practical standard for current video work. It provides enough detail for large screens and gives you the ability to crop or stabilise in post-production while maintaining full HD output quality. 1080p (1920x1080) is still acceptable for web content and produces smaller files. The X-H2's 6.2K and 8K modes are specialist tools for high-end production where maximum resolution matters or where heavy cropping in post is planned.

Codecs

Fujifilm cameras offer H.264 and H.265 (HEVC) recording, with ProRes available on the X-H2S and X-H2. H.264 has the widest compatibility: virtually every editing application and device can play it. H.265 produces similar quality at roughly half the file size but requires more processing power to edit. ProRes is a professional editing codec that is easier for editing software to work with but produces very large files.

For most users, H.265 at the highest available bitrate is the best balance of quality, file size, and compatibility. If you edit on a powerful computer and want the smoothest editing experience, ProRes (on bodies that support it) is worth the storage cost. If you need maximum compatibility with older devices or software, use H.264.

The 180-Degree Rule and Video Exposure

Video exposure follows the same aperture/shutter speed/ISO triangle as stills, but with one critical constraint: shutter speed is not a free variable. In stills, you choose whatever shutter speed suits the moment. In video, shutter speed determines how much motion blur each frame has, and viewers have strong expectations about how motion should look.

The 180-Degree Rule

The standard for natural-looking motion blur in video is to set the shutter speed to double your frame rate. At 24fps, use 1/50s. At 30fps, use 1/60s. At 60fps, use 1/125s. This produces the amount of motion blur that audiences expect from video: enough to smooth out movement without creating a staccato, overly sharp look.

This is a convention, not a law. You can use faster shutter speeds for a harder, more intense look (think the opening battle in Saving Private Ryan, which used very fast shutter speeds for a jarring, hyperreal effect). But for most video work, the 180-degree rule produces natural, pleasing results.

The ND Filter Problem

In stills, if the scene is too bright, you use a faster shutter speed. In video, your shutter speed is locked to the 180-degree rule. If the scene is too bright at 1/50s and f/2.8, you cannot go to 1/1000s without ruining the motion blur. Instead, you need a neutral density (ND) filter: a dark glass filter that reduces the amount of light entering the lens without affecting colour or sharpness.

Variable ND filters (which let you dial in different levels of light reduction by turning the filter ring) are the most practical option for video. They let you maintain your desired aperture and shutter speed in any light condition. A good variable ND filter is one of the most important accessories for anyone doing regular video work on Fujifilm.

ISO for Video

The same ISO performance guidelines apply to video as to stills: lower is cleaner, higher introduces noise. However, noise in video can be more distracting than in stills because it moves and shifts between frames, creating a "crawling" pattern that draws the eye. If you are shooting video, err on the side of keeping ISO lower than you might accept for stills. ISO 3200 that looks acceptable in a still can look noisy and distracting in video. Auto ISO works for video but be aware that visible ISO changes during a clip (the camera raising or lowering ISO as you pan across different brightness areas) can produce flickering that is difficult to fix in post.

Film Simulations for Video

The choice between shooting with a baked-in film simulation look and shooting flat for grading in post is the biggest creative decision in Fujifilm video. Both approaches are valid, and the right choice depends on your workflow, your editing skills, and your deadline.

Eterna: The Video-Native Simulation

Eterna was designed specifically for video. It produces low-saturation, low-contrast output that mimics the look of Fujifilm's cinema negative film stocks. Straight out of camera, Eterna footage looks muted and flat, which is intentional: it is designed as a starting point for colour grading, with maximum latitude for pushing the grade in any direction. If you plan to colour grade your footage in editing software, Eterna is the best simulation to start from because it preserves the most colour and tonal information.

Eterna Bleach Bypass adds higher contrast and further desaturation, producing a gritty, metallic look that can work as a finished grade for certain styles. It is more of a creative choice than a grading base.

Baked-In Looks: Shooting Finished

For many video projects, the most efficient workflow is to choose a simulation that already looks the way you want and shoot finished, just as you would with stills recipes. Classic Chrome for documentary and travel video. Classic Neg. for warm, lifestyle content. Provia for neutral, accurate colour. The footage comes out of the camera with the look you intended, and post-production is limited to cutting and basic adjustments.

This approach works best when you do not plan to do heavy colour grading, when you need fast turnaround (event video, social media content, client previews), or when you prefer the in-camera look to what you can achieve in software. The trade-off is that baked-in looks have less latitude for correction if the exposure or white balance is slightly off, because the tone curve and colour mapping are already committed.

F-Log and F-Log2: Maximum Flexibility

F-Log is Fujifilm's logarithmic video profile, which captures the widest possible dynamic range by compressing the highlights and shadows into a flat, low-contrast image. F-Log2 (available on newer bodies) extends this further with even more highlight headroom. These profiles are designed exclusively for footage that will be colour graded in post: they look terrible without grading but give you the maximum amount of information to work with.

F-Log and F-Log2 are not film simulations. They bypass the simulation engine entirely and record a neutral, log-encoded image. Use them when you need to match Fujifilm footage with other cameras in a multi-camera production, when you need to push the grade significantly, or when you have the time and skill to grade every clip. For single-camera work where efficiency matters, a film simulation is usually a better choice.

Audio: The Half You Cannot Ignore

Audiences will tolerate imperfect video quality but they will not tolerate bad audio. Muddy, distorted, or wind-blown audio makes video unwatchable regardless of how beautiful the image is. Audio deserves at least as much attention as your visual settings.

Built-In Microphone Limitations

The microphones built into Fujifilm cameras are adequate for reference audio (syncing with external audio in post, capturing ambient sound for B-roll) but poor for dialogue, interviews, or any content where clear speech matters. They pick up handling noise, autofocus motor sound, image stabilisation vibration, and ambient noise indiscriminately. If your video includes people talking, an external microphone is not optional; it is essential.

External Microphone Options

A shotgun microphone mounted on the camera's hot shoe is the simplest upgrade. It picks up sound directionally (primarily from in front of the camera) and rejects noise from the sides and rear. This works well for interviews, vlogs, and any situation where the subject is in front of the camera. A lavalier (lapel) microphone, either wired or wireless, clips to the subject's clothing and captures clear speech regardless of camera distance. Wireless lavalier systems have become affordable and reliable.

For the best audio quality, record to a separate audio recorder and sync the audio to the video in editing. This gives you higher quality preamps and more control over audio levels than the camera's audio input provides. This is the professional approach but adds complexity to the workflow.

Practical Audio Settings

Set audio recording levels manually rather than using automatic gain control. Auto gain adjusts levels constantly, which produces audible pumping and breathing in the audio. Manual levels set to peak around -12 dB give you headroom for sudden loud sounds without clipping. Monitor audio through headphones during recording whenever possible: you cannot fix what you did not hear.

Stabilisation and Focus for Video

Handheld with IBIS

Fujifilm bodies with in-body image stabilisation (X-T5, X-H2, X-H2S, X-S20) produce significantly smoother handheld video than bodies without. IBIS compensates for small hand movements and makes walking-and-shooting footage usable where it would be unwatchably shaky on a non-stabilised body. Combined with OIS in the lens (on lenses that have it), the stabilisation is effective enough for casual handheld video.

IBIS has limits. It cannot smooth out large movements (running, being in a vehicle on rough ground) and it can introduce a slight "floating" or "jelly" quality to the image during fast movements. For professional-quality handheld footage, a gimbal (a motorised stabiliser that holds the camera steady) produces significantly smoother results than IBIS alone.

Tripod and Slider Work

For static shots and controlled camera movements (pans, tilts), a tripod with a fluid video head is essential. Fluid heads have damping that smooths out the start and stop of movements, which ball heads designed for stills do not provide. Disable IBIS when the camera is on a tripod; the stabilisation system can overcorrect and introduce slight movement to an otherwise steady shot.

Autofocus During Video

Fujifilm's video autofocus has improved significantly with each generation. On X-Trans V bodies, AF-C with Face/Eye Detection tracks subjects smoothly and reliably during recording. On older bodies, video AF can hunt (oscillating back and forth around the correct focus) in low contrast or low light situations.

Video autofocus behaviour is deliberately slower and smoother than stills AF. The camera transitions focus gradually rather than snapping instantly, which prevents jarring focus jumps in the footage. This smooth transition is usually desirable, but it means the camera takes a moment to catch up when you reframe to a new subject.

Manual focus gives you the most control for deliberate focus pulls (shifting focus from one subject to another as a creative technique). Enable focus peaking during recording to see which areas are in focus as a coloured overlay on the screen. Focus pulls require practice to execute smoothly, but they are one of the most effective ways to direct the viewer's attention within a video frame.
