Fujifilm Sensor Generations Explained

Fujifilm has released five generations of X-Trans sensors, each with different image processing capabilities. Understanding which generation your camera uses is essential because it determines which film simulations are available and how recipes translate between cameras.

*The X-S20 and X-M5 both pair a 26MP X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor with the newer X-Processor 5. It is the processor, not the sensor, that determines which simulations and JPEG settings you get, so they are grouped here with the X-Trans V bodies.

Film Simulation Availability by Generation

Not every film simulation is available on every camera. Newer simulations require newer image processors. This table shows exactly which simulations your camera supports:

The two qualified cells are the ones that catch people out. Classic Neg. arrived with the X-Pro3, so the X-T3 and X-T30 do not have it despite being X-Trans IV. Eterna Bleach Bypass arrived later still, with the X-T4, so it is missing from the X-T3, X-T30, X-Pro3 and X100V.

Porting Recipes Between Cameras

Same Generation: Identical Results

Cameras with the same sensor generation and processor produce identical output from the same settings. An X-T4 recipe will look exactly the same on an X-S10 or X100V. All three use X-Trans IV with X-Processor 4.

The exception inside X-Trans IV is the X-T3 and X-T30. They share the sensor and processor but shipped before the X-Pro3 added Clarity, Color Chrome FX Blue, grain size and Classic Neg., so a recipe built on a later X-Trans IV body may not transfer to them in full. What they do share renders the same; it is the missing controls, not the colour science, that differ.

Cross-Generation: Subtle Differences

When porting between generations, expect subtle differences:

  • Colour rendering. Film simulation algorithms are refined with each generation. Classic Chrome on X-Trans V has slightly different tonal character than on X-Trans III. The difference is subtle but noticeable in side-by-side comparison.
  • Noise handling. Newer sensors handle high ISO better, which affects how grain and noise interact at ISO 3200+.
  • Tone curve response. The same Highlight +2 / Shadow -1 values may produce slightly different contrast on different processors.

In practice, these differences are small enough that most recipes translate well across generations. You may need to adjust white balance shift by ±1 or tweak a tone curve value, but the character of the recipe carries over.

Missing Simulations: What to Do

If a recipe uses a simulation your camera doesn't support, you cannot replicate it exactly. The closest alternatives:

  • Classic Neg not available? Try Classic Chrome with WB shift R+2 and slight warm Kelvin for a similar split-tone feel.
  • Nostalgic Neg not available? Try Classic Chrome or Velvia with high warm WB shift (7000K+, R+3).
  • REALA ACE not available? Use Provia with Auto WB. It is the closest neutral alternative.
  • ACROS not available? Use Monochrome, which is available on all X-Trans generations.

Beyond film simulations, some recipe settings are only available on newer cameras:

The pattern worth internalising is that X-Trans IV is not one thing. The X-T3 and X-T30 launched the generation with a much smaller JPEG feature set, and the X-Pro3 added most of what recipe writers now take for granted: Clarity, Color Chrome FX Blue, grain size, Monochromatic Color, and Classic Neg. If a recipe will not go into your X-T3, this is almost always why.

When a recipe specifies a setting your camera doesn't support (Clarity on an X-T3, say), simply skip that setting. The recipe will still work; the missing setting just won't be applied.
