REALA ACE Film Simulation Deep Dive

REALA ACE is Fujifilm's newest colour film simulation, introduced on the GFX100 II in 2023 and rolled out across the X-Processor 5 line-up: at launch on newer bodies (X100VI, X-T50, X-M5) and via the June 2024 firmware updates on the X-T5, X-S20, X-H2, and X-H2S. It is a digital interpretation of the original Fuji Reala 100 colour negative film, a stock prized in the 1990s for its remarkably accurate skin tones and fourth-colour-layer technology that handled mixed lighting with unusual grace.

On a Fujifilm body, REALA ACE sits between Classic Negative and PRO Neg Std in character. It carries a touch more saturation than PRO Neg, slightly less contrast than Classic Negative, and renders skin in a notably softer, more flattering way than either. It has quickly become one of the most popular simulations for photographers who want a balanced, "honest" colour rendering that still feels filmic.

Skin Tones

REALA ACE's biggest strength is skin. It renders complexions with a soft warmth that sits between the cool restraint of PRO Neg Std and the slightly punchy warmth of Classic Chrome. Highlights on faces roll off gently rather than clipping to white, and mid-tones keep a natural, slightly creamy quality. For portrait and wedding work it is often the most flattering option in the menu.

Greens and Foliage

Greens render with a moderate saturation and a slight cool shift, giving foliage a convincing natural appearance without the over-saturated look of Velvia or the muted character of Classic Negative. This makes REALA ACE surprisingly versatile for landscape work, particularly in summer when Velvia can push greens into the unreal.

Reds and Yellows

Reds are slightly muted compared to Provia, which prevents red clothing or signage from dominating a frame. Yellows are warm without becoming acidic. The combination gives REALA ACE a distinctly editorial quality: colours read clearly but never shout.

Shadows and Highlights

REALA ACE has a slightly flatter native contrast curve than Provia or Classic Chrome. Shadows retain more detail by default, and highlights roll off softly. This makes it unusually forgiving in contrasty light. Backlit portraits, dappled sunlight, and high mid-day contrast all hold together well without aggressive Highlight/Shadow tweaking.

Dynamic Range

DR200 is the everyday default for REALA ACE. The native curve already protects highlights well, and DR200 adds enough extra latitude for outdoor and mixed-light scenes without dulling the mid-tones. Step up to DR400 only for genuinely high-contrast scenes (backlit subjects, harsh midday sun). The dynamic range guide explains the trade-offs.

Highlight and Shadow Tone

REALA ACE responds well to small adjustments. For a slightly more filmic, lower-contrast look, try Highlight -1 and Shadow -1. For a punchier, more digital look, push both towards 0 or +1. Go easy in both directions: heavy negative values flatten a curve that is already gentle, and heavy positive values crush the shadows the simulation is designed to hold open. Either extreme costs you REALA ACE's character.

White Balance

Auto White Balance works well with REALA ACE in most conditions. For a warmer, editorial look, shift WB +1 Red and +1 Blue (a subtle magenta lean that flatters skin). For a cooler, more contemporary look, shift -1 Red and +1 Blue. The white balance guide covers shift mechanics in detail.

Color and Sharpness

REALA ACE's default Color setting (0) is well-judged. Drop to -1 for a quieter, editorial register; push to +1 for slightly punchier scenes. Sharpness at 0 or -1 keeps the look filmic; +1 and above starts to feel digital and undermines the simulation's character.

Color Chrome Effect and Color Chrome Blue

Color Chrome Effect at Weak adds depth to saturated tones without affecting overall contrast. Pair it with REALA ACE for foliage and portrait work. Color Chrome Blue at Weak is excellent for skies, deepening blues without affecting other colours. Strong settings for both can become heavy with REALA ACE; Weak is usually the sweet spot.

Grain

REALA ACE pairs beautifully with Weak grain at Small size for portraits, or Weak/Large for landscape work where you want a more visible filmic texture. See the grain and texture guide for sizing considerations.

Reach for REALA ACE when you want a balanced, slightly soft, slightly warm rendering that flatters skin and keeps colour believable. It is the strongest all-rounder in the current Fujifilm line-up, equally at home for portraits, weddings, family, travel, and most landscape work.

It is less suited to scenes where you want punch and drama (reach for Velvia or Classic Chrome), or where you want the deliberate restraint of an old colour negative (Classic Negative or Nostalgic Neg do that better). For documentary, editorial, and personal work where the goal is "natural but considered", REALA ACE usually wins.

vs Provia: REALA ACE is softer, with gentler contrast and a warmer skin response. Provia is the punchier, more neutral default. For people, REALA ACE usually flatters more.

vs Classic Chrome: Classic Chrome leans documentary, with desaturated greens and a cooler overall tone. REALA ACE is warmer and slightly more saturated, giving a friendlier register that suits family and lifestyle work.

vs Classic Negative: Classic Negative has a distinct contrast and colour shift that reads as "filmic". REALA ACE is more transparent, staying out of the way of the subject rather than imposing a character.

vs PRO Neg Std: PRO Neg Std is flatter and cooler than REALA ACE, with less saturation across the board. REALA ACE gives you a similar gentleness with slightly more colour life. Most photographers find it the better default of the two.
