JPEG vs RAW: A Fujifilm Workflow Guide

Why the JPEG vs RAW conversation is different on Fujifilm, and how to choose the right workflow for your shooting style. Covers in-camera processing, the hybrid approach, and software options.

Why This Conversation Is Different on Fujifilm

On most camera systems, the JPEG vs RAW debate has a clear answer: shoot RAW if you care about quality, JPEG if you want convenience. The camera's JPEG processing is treated as a rough draft at best, something to be discarded in favour of proper editing on a computer. Fujifilm breaks this assumption.

Fujifilm's in-camera JPEG processing is built on colour science developed over decades of manufacturing actual photographic film. When the camera applies a film simulation to your image, it is not running a simple colour filter. It is applying a complex set of tonal curves, colour channel adjustments, and rendering algorithms that are specific to each simulation and optimised for the X-Trans sensor's particular colour filter array. The result is a JPEG file with genuine character and depth that is genuinely difficult to replicate from the RAW file in third-party software.

This does not mean RAW is pointless on Fujifilm. It means the trade-off is different. On other systems, you shoot RAW to get quality. On Fujifilm, you often shoot JPEG to get the look you want and RAW as insurance for when things go wrong. That shift in priority changes how you think about your workflow, and it is the reason many experienced Fujifilm photographers have moved away from RAW-heavy workflows that they used on previous camera systems.

What You Gain and Lose with Each Format

Understanding what each format actually gives you, rather than what the internet says it gives you, is the foundation of choosing the right workflow.

What JPEG Gives You

A Fujifilm JPEG is a fully processed image file. The film simulation, tone curve, colour adjustments, grain, sharpening, noise reduction, dynamic range processing, and white balance are all baked in. The file is smaller (typically 10 to 20 MB versus 50 to 70 MB for RAW), ready to share immediately, and represents the camera's best interpretation of the scene using the settings you chose.

Critically, some of Fujifilm's most useful features only work on the JPEG. The Dynamic Range settings (DR200 and DR400) apply their highlight-recovery tone mapping during JPEG processing. The grain effect is rendered into the JPEG. Color Chrome Effect and Color Chrome FX Blue are JPEG-only processing steps. If you shoot RAW only, you lose access to these features entirely. You can approximate them in editing software, but the results will not be identical.

The limitation of JPEG is latitude. If you underexpose by two stops or badly misjudge the white balance, a JPEG has limited room for correction before the image degrades. Shadow recovery introduces noise and banding quickly. Colour shifts from white balance correction can look unnatural. The image is "cooked," and you cannot uncook it very far.

What RAW Gives You

A RAW file is the unprocessed data from the sensor. No film simulation, no sharpening, no noise reduction, no grain, no dynamic range processing. It is a blank canvas that contains the maximum amount of information the sensor captured, and you decide what to do with it afterwards.

The advantage is latitude. You can recover two or more stops of underexposure from shadow areas without significant degradation. You can change the white balance after the fact with no quality loss because the colour temperature is applied during processing, not baked in. You can try different simulations on the same image (using Fujifilm's own tools or third-party software) to see which works best. If you made a mistake, RAW gives you a second chance.

The limitation is that RAW files require processing. An unprocessed RAW file looks flat and dull. You need software to apply a look to it, and crucially, third-party software does not replicate Fujifilm's film simulations perfectly. Lightroom's "Classic Chrome" profile is an approximation, not a match. Capture One gets closer but still differs in subtle ways. If the specific look of a Fujifilm film simulation is important to you, the JPEG from the camera is the authoritative version.

The RAW+JPEG Hybrid

The majority of experienced Fujifilm recipe shooters settle on a hybrid approach: shoot RAW+JPEG, use the JPEGs as your primary output, and keep the RAW files as insurance. This gives you the best of both worlds at the cost of storage space and a slightly more complicated file management workflow.

How the Hybrid Works in Practice

Set your camera to RAW+JPEG (Fine quality, Large size). When you import your images, you get two files for every shot. Review the JPEGs first. For the vast majority of images, the JPEG will be exactly what you wanted. Use it as-is. For the occasional image where you missed the exposure, the white balance is wrong, or you want to try a different simulation, open the RAW file and process it.

Over time, you will develop a sense of how often you actually need the RAW files. Many photographers find that they dip into RAW for fewer than 5% of their images. Some go months without opening a single RAW file. This is not a sign that you should stop shooting RAW+JPEG; it is a sign that the insurance is working as intended. The images where you need the RAW are typically the ones that matter most: the fleeting moment with imperfect exposure, the once-in- a-lifetime shot under difficult lighting.

Managing the Storage

RAW+JPEG roughly triples your storage consumption compared to JPEG alone. A 64 GB memory card that holds 3,000 JPEGs will hold around 1,000 RAW+JPEG pairs. On a heavy shooting day, this can fill a card faster than expected.

The practical solution is a periodic cull. After importing and reviewing your images, delete the RAW files for images where the JPEG is perfect and you know you will never need to reprocess. Keep the RAW files for images you value, images with tricky exposure, and anything where you might want to revisit the processing later. This reduces the long-term storage burden while preserving the safety net where it matters.

In-Camera RAW Processing: The Fujifilm Secret Weapon

Fujifilm cameras have a feature that many owners never discover: the ability to reprocess RAW files directly inside the camera, using the camera's own image processor. This means you can take a RAW file, apply any film simulation with any combination of settings, and output a new JPEG that is indistinguishable from one shot with those settings in the first place. It is the closest thing to time travel in photography.

How It Works

On most Fujifilm bodies, you access in-camera RAW processing through the playback menu. Find the RAW image you want to reprocess, select "RAW Conversion" (the exact menu label varies by camera generation), and you are presented with the full range of film simulation and image quality settings. Change the simulation, adjust the white balance, tweak the tone curve, add grain. When you are satisfied, the camera processes the RAW file using its own X-Processor and writes a new JPEG alongside the original files.

The critical advantage is fidelity. Because the camera's own processor is doing the work, the output is pixel-identical to what you would have got if you had shot with those settings originally. No third-party approximation. No colour mismatch. The exact Fujifilm look, applied after the fact.

When to Use It

In-camera RAW processing is ideal for a few specific situations. You shot a scene and later realised a different film simulation would have been better. You want to create multiple versions of the same image with different recipes. You are experimenting with a new recipe and want to test it against images you have already taken rather than shooting new test images.

It is less useful for heavy correction. If you underexposed by three stops and need to lift the shadows significantly, the camera's built-in tools are limited compared to desktop software. In-camera processing is about changing the creative interpretation, not rescuing technical failures.

X RAW Studio: The Desktop Extension

Fujifilm's free X RAW Studio software extends this concept to your computer. It connects to your camera via USB and uses the camera's processor to convert RAW files, giving you the same pixel-perfect output on a larger screen with slightly more convenient controls. The camera must be connected during processing, which is its main limitation, but the results are identical to in-camera conversion.

For recipe shooters, X RAW Studio is particularly valuable. It lets you batch-process RAW files through different recipes without physically re-entering settings into the camera for each variation. Processing Fujifilm RAW on a Computer

When you need more control than in-camera processing provides, you will turn to desktop RAW processing software. Not all software handles Fujifilm's X-Trans sensor equally well, and understanding the differences saves frustration.

The X-Trans Challenge

Fujifilm's X-Trans sensor uses a non-standard colour filter array that differs from the Bayer pattern used by virtually every other camera manufacturer. Most RAW processing software was designed for Bayer sensors, and some handles the X-Trans demosaicing (the process of converting the raw sensor data into a full-colour image) better than others. Poor demosaicing can produce "worm-like" artefacts in areas of fine detail, particularly in foliage and fabric textures. This was a significant problem in the early years of X-Trans but has improved considerably as software has been updated.

Capture One

Capture One has the best third-party X-Trans rendering. Its demosaicing algorithm produces clean, detailed results with no worm artefacts, and its colour handling is excellent. Fujifilm has worked directly with Capture One on X-Trans support, and it shows. The film simulation profiles in Capture One are not identical to the camera's output, but they are closer than any other third-party option.

Capture One is professional software with a professional learning curve and a corresponding price. If you process Fujifilm RAW files regularly and care about quality, it is the best tool available. If you process RAW occasionally, it may be more tool than you need.

Adobe Lightroom

Lightroom is the most popular RAW processor in the world, and its X-Trans support has improved significantly over the years. The "Enhance Details" feature (introduced in 2019) uses machine learning to improve X-Trans demosaicing, which largely resolved the worm artefact problem. With Enhanced Details enabled, Lightroom produces good results from Fujifilm RAW files.

The main limitation is colour matching. Lightroom includes film simulation profiles (labelled "Camera Matching"), but they are approximations that differ from the camera's actual output, sometimes noticeably. If you have trained your eye on Fujifilm's in-camera rendering, the Lightroom versions can feel slightly "off," particularly with Classic Chrome and Classic Neg. where the shadow rendering and colour palette are distinctive. Lightroom is a perfectly good tool for processing Fujifilm RAW files, but go in knowing that the output will not match your in-camera JPEGs exactly.

Other Options

Darktable and RawTherapee are free, open-source RAW processors that handle X-Trans files with varying degrees of success. Both have improved their X-Trans support over the years and produce acceptable results for photographers who prefer open-source software or do not want a subscription. Iridient Developer (Mac only) has long been respected for its X-Trans demosaicing quality and can be used as a standalone processor or as a plugin for Lightroom.

Choosing Your Workflow

There is no single right answer to the JPEG vs RAW question. The best workflow depends on what you shoot, how you use your images, and how much time you want to spend at a computer. Here are three honest starting points.

If You Mostly Share Online

Shoot JPEG, or RAW+JPEG with the JPEGs as your primary output. Social media, messaging apps, and most online use cases compress images aggressively, which eliminates any quality advantage RAW processing might provide. The Fujifilm JPEG, with its film simulation colour and in-camera processing, is optimised for this exact use case. Invest your time in choosing the right recipe and getting the shot right in camera rather than spending hours in editing software producing files that will be compressed to a fraction of their quality on upload.

If You Print or Deliver to Clients

Shoot RAW+JPEG. Use the JPEGs for previews, selects, and quick delivery. Process the RAW files for the final deliverables where you need maximum quality, precise colour control, or significant correction. Large prints in particular benefit from RAW processing because they expose any noise, banding, or compression artefacts that are invisible on screen.

For client work where colour accuracy matters (product photography, commercial shoots), RAW gives you the ability to match specific colour targets that in-camera processing cannot guarantee. For client work where speed matters (events, weddings, editorial), well-tuned JPEG recipes can reduce your turnaround dramatically.

If You Are Still Learning

Shoot RAW+JPEG and focus on the JPEGs. Learning to get things right in camera, choosing the right simulation, reading the light, nailing the exposure, is more valuable than learning to fix mistakes in software. The JPEGs give you immediate feedback on your recipe and exposure choices. The RAW files are there as a safety net for the images that matter, and as a learning tool: comparing what you got in-camera with what you can pull from the RAW file teaches you where the boundaries of each format lie.

As your shooting improves, you will naturally gravitate towards whichever format serves your priorities. Some photographers move towards JPEG-only as their recipes and exposure get more reliable. Others develop an editing style that requires RAW latitude. Both paths are legitimate, and neither makes you more or less of a photographer.
